10-22-2010   The NWCC and the Max Pavey Chess Club joined forces to host the Hudson Valley October Fridays at their location in Briarcliff Manor. A competitive field of 10 battled on four consecutive Fridays, with Kim Qvistorff sweeping to a 4-0 victory. Dan Garrett finished second with 3 points, losing to the winner in the final round. 03-15-2009 The Hudson Valley March Open  was a very competitive affair with two three-way ties at the top. Talented junior Kevin Rosenberg, Stephen Zabbia, and senior Hubert Herring tied for the top spot with 3-1, while young Alan Briones and veterans Mark Schonfeld and Polly Wright were next at 2.0. 09-28-2008 Chester Bean of the Vassar-Chadwick Chess Club won the Hudson Valley September Sunday Open with 3½ out of 4. Joseph Guadagno took second place with 3-1, losing only to the winner. 09-24-2008 The NWCC September Swiss was captured by the club's youngest member, Jimmy Jiang! After losing a tough battle with top seed Robert Cousins, Jimmy went on to win his remaining games and take first prize, 3-1, increasing his rating to 1743! 09-01-2008 A field of eighteen competed in the annual John Jay Homestead Labor Day Chess Tournament at the historical site in Katonah, NY. Expert Richard Robinson tied with Jack Rosenberger for first place in the 4-round event, each with 3½ pts. Rosenberger, a frequent participant in NWCC events, did especially well, winning twice against much higher rated opponents! NWCC member and USCF Expert Kim Qvistorff and veterans Ron Green and Paul McGlothin all scored 3 pts to share 3rd place. unrated
08-27-2008 USCF Master Dale Sharp captured the abbreviated NWCC August Swiss with a perfect 3-0 score. It was a three-way tie for 2nd between Robert Cousins, Alan Briones, and new member Dino Pete, who made an impressive debut by defeating Cousins in round two. 200808272561
08-06-2008 Robert Cousins took another NWCC event, winning the 3rd Wednesday Doubleheader with a 4-0 score. Robert has won or tied for first in six of the seven events he's entered since joining the club, raising his rating to 2193. 03-31-2008 The Hudson Valley March Sunday Open, the NWCC's first ever Sunday event at Drum Hill, drew a competitive field of 16. USCF Expert Robert Cousins won the event with a perfect 4-0 score, including a third round win over USCF Master Dale Sharp. Sharp finished with 3 points, tied for 2nd with improving youngster Alan Briones, who upset veteran USCF Master Lonnie Kwartler. Veteran Hubert Herring, returning to the USCF and tournament play after a long layoff, had a fine tournament, raising his rating over 100 points. Similarly, recent returnee Greg Pulliam also scored a 100+ point increase, with both of his wins coming against higher rated opponents. 200803303811

09-15-2007 Lonnie Kwartler won the Warner Library September Quad in Tarrytown, NY. Youngster Dario Dell'Orto finished an impressive 2nd, scoring 2 points against much higher rated opponents.
09-03-2007 The Annual Labor Day Chess Tournament at the John Jay Homestead in Katonah drew 43 players in two sections. Michael Morin won the 16 player Scholastic Section, winning all 4 of his games. The 28 player Open Section was very competitive, with 5 players within a point of winner Charles J. Pole's 4½ points. Promising junior Michael Ainsworth turned in an excellent performance, tying Peter Barkman for 2nd place with 4 pts, including 3 out 4 versus the highest-rated players. NWCC member Joseph Guadagno, last year's winner Alexander Katz, and Nicholai Kravitz all tied for 3rd place, each scoring 3½ points. NWCC President Sal Catalfamo assisted Ed Eusebi and Scott Finlayson in directing the event. Unrated

06-30-2007 Michael Mendez took 1st place in the Warner Library June Open in Tarrytown, NY. Lonnie Kwartler, Alan Briones, and Michael O'Connor all tied for 2nd.
06-27-2007 After a competitive and surprise-filled seven rounds, the 2007 NWCC Championship ended in a three-way tie! The order of finish, based on USCF-sanctioned tie-breaks, is John Kearns, Mark Schonfeld, and John Gallagher. 200706276741
04-21-2007 Stephen Zabbia and Lonnie Kwartler tied for 1st in the inaugural Warner Library Tournament in Tarrytown, NY. The event was hosted jointly by the NWCC and the newly formed Warner Library Chess Club.
04-04-2007 John Kearns won again, defeating tournament leader Joseph Guadagno in the final round to take first prize in the abbreviated NWCC March Swiss. Guadagno finished tied for 2nd, along with Jerry Kurtzberg, Alan Briones and Stephen Zabbia.
02-28-2007 USCF Expert John Kearns, playing in his first tournament since becoming a club member, won the NWCC February Open with a 4-0 score. Alan Briones and Kevin Fleming shared 2nd place with 3 pts each.
01-24-2007 Stephen Zabbia defeated tournament leader Jerry Kurtzberg in the penultimate round and went on to win the NWCC January Open with a score of  3½-½! Jerry Kurtzberg finished 2nd, with Steven Qvistorff, Kevin Fleming, and Paul Betjeman tied for 3rd.
01-20-2007 Kim Qvistorff and his son Steven tied atop a small field as we held our first tournament at the Mahopac Library.
12-27-2006 After drawing with each other in the penultimate round, Mark Schonfeld and Steven Qvistorff each won their final round game, overtaking tournament leader Alan Briones and capturing a share of 1st prize in the NWCC Year End Open! Briones was upset by Under 1700 prizewinner Kevin Fleming. The seven-round event was an exciting and competitive affair, with five of the ten participants achieving plus scores, and seven of the ten within striking range of prize money!

Our First Annual Holiday Blitz Tournament was held tonite in conjunction with the club Christmas/Hanukah party. After stuffing ourselves with pizza, we played a round robin of 5 minute games, with an extra minute handicap per 200 rating points. Kim Qvistorff took top honors with a perfect 8-0 score! Joe Guadagno and Mark Schonfeld tied for second with 5½, and juniors Alan Briones and Jimmy Jiang tied for 4th with 4½! Many thanks to Club President Sal Catalfamo for dipping into the treasury for another enjoyable club event. "A great time was had by all!"

Alan Briones grabbed the top spot in the NWCC October Wednesday Swiss  by defeating top-seeded leader Jerry Kurtzberg in an interesting Sicilian Defense. The 14 year-old winner scored 2½ out of 3 to raise his rating to 1831. Mark Schonfeld and Kevin Fleming shared second place honors with 2 pts each. Originally scheduled as a Quad, the  tournament had to be run as a small swiss due to poor attendance, but among the contestants were the club's two newest members, Frank Sullivan and Jimmy Jiang.

09-27-2006 An exciting final round resulted in a four way tie for 1st place in the NWCC September Wednesday Swiss! The club's three youngest members, Stephen Zabbia, Steven Qvistorff, and Alan Briones, were joined by Kevin Fleming, all scoring 3 points out of 4. Qvistorff, Zabbia, and Fleming were tied for the lead with 2½ going into the final round. Qvistorff - Zabbia was a hard fought Queen's Gambit which resulted in a draw when Zabbia didn't convert his extra pawn in a rook ending. Kevin Fleming was down a whole rook to Jerry Kurtzberg. But Kevin alertly spotted a careless move by his much higher-rated opponent, and found a stalemate trick. Try as he might, the Black King could find no shelter from the incessant checks of White's desperado rook. Alan Briones defeated Jeff Scott to complete the four way deadlock.
09-04-2006 The Annual Labor Day Chess Tournament at the John Jay Homestead in Katonah drew 35 players and many spectators from the area for five rounds of Quick Chess! Jason Fiammetta won the 10 player Scholastic Section with 4½ points. Terina Johnson was 2nd with 4 out of 5. The 25 player Open Section was a challenging group for an unrated event, with no less than 11 players of Class 'A' and above. Max Pavey CC member and frequent NWCC tournament participant Alexander Katz led the way with 4½ points. Nicholai Kravitz was 2nd with 4.0. NWCC members Alan Briones and Joe Guadagno each won three games, and NWCC President Sal Catalfamo assisted Ed Eusebi in directing the event.
08-30-2006 Kim Qvistorff scored 3½ pts and defeated Jerry Kurtzberg in the final round to capture top honors in the NWCC August Wednesday Swiss. Kurtzberg and John Gallagher tied for 2nd Place with 3 pts each. The tournament was well-attended again, with another field of 14 similar to last month.
07-26-2006 Dale Sharp won the NWCC July Wednesday Swiss with a score of three wins and one draw. Kim Qvistorff, Joseph Guadagno, and Alan Briones tied for 2nd place, each scoring 3 points. The field of 14, including a master, 2 experts, and 4 A-players was our largest and strongest ever for a Wednesday tournament!
06-24-2006 The NWCA held it's first Scholastic Tournament on Saturday, 6/24 at the Mahopac Library. The unrated section consisted of ten youngsters ages 6 thru 12. Sebastian Gonzalez, age 8, took home the first place trophy, finishing just a ½ pt ahead of 12 yr old Sal Costa. The rated section was won by Steven Qvistorff, with Alan Briones second. Another star of the day was Sam Donow, who played competitive games against much higher rated players. Sal Catalfamo directed, assisted by Joe Guadagno
06-21-2006 Stephen Zabbia swept to the top prize in the NWCC Spring Wednesday Swiss with 5 pts. Jeff Scott and Alan Briones shared 2nd prize at 3½. The 18 year-old winner gained enough rating points to move into Class A at 1803!
04-26-2006 Joseph Guadagno won the 2006 NWCC Championship with an undefeated score of six wins and two draws. Mark Schonfeld finished a strong second with 6½ pts, losing only to the eventual winner. Stephen Zabbia took 3rd place and the trophy for 'best score Under 1700' with 5½ pts. Jerry Kurtzberg and John Gallagher tied for 4th place with 4½. 200604264271
